HELLO 5th graders! We are going to start a new unit; unit 3: Getting around town

The TOPICS of this new unit are:

  1. 1. VOCABULARY:
  • PLACES or BUILDINGS in a VILLAGE, TOWN or CITY (museum, square, town hall, hospital, supermarket, market, post office, shopping centre, hotel, bus/train station, airport, cinema, theatre, restaurant, café, sports centre, school, etc.
  • EMOTIONS / FEELINGS (and some other adjectives divided in opposites): happy-sad, bored-excited, friendly-unfriendly, worried-relaxed, funny-boring, fast-slow, etc.

2. GRAMMAR:

  • GIVING DIRECTIONS: Go straight on, turn left/right, go past the (school/park/…), the shopping centre is on your left/right. – Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the train station? – Yes, sure! Turn right and then go straight on until you go past the hotel. Then the station is on your left. – Thank you! – You are welcome!
  • PAST SIMPLE: THERE WAS /THERE WERE

All about grammar – Past simple: there was / there were

We often use THERE WAS / THERE WERE + NOUN when we talk about PLACES in the PAST.

AFFIRMATIVE +

  • There was A school in my street. (SINGULAR = ONLY 1 SCHOOL )
  • There was A bus station in my neighborhood. (SINGULAR = ONLY 1 BUS STATION)
  • There were SOME shops in the village. (PLURAL = 2 or MORE SHOPS)
  • There were SOME museums in Cuenca. (PLURAL = 2 or MORE MUSEUMS)

NEGATIVE –

  • There wasn’t A school in my street (SINGULAR = 0 SCHOOLS)
  • There wasn’t A bus station in my neighborhood. (SINGULAR = ONLY 1 BUS STATION)
